Summer Projects / Summer Activity Programmes 2010

Summer Projects and Summer Activity Programmes in the Finglas area operated very successfully during July and August of this year with in excess of one thousand young people participating in various recreational and educational activities in a safe and friendly environment.

Home-based activities included arts and crafts, sports days, quizzes and cookery whilst day trips were organised to various venues including outdoor activity centres and the cinema.

Dublin City Council’s Gardening Project Initiative

Since 2007 Dublin City Council’s Play Development Unit have employed gardening students to develop gardening projects across the City. These projects aim to give children an active involvement in their local environment during the summer months by designing and planting up new flowerbeds on green spaces in conjunction with the gardening students.

Beneavin Residents Association expressed an interest in enhancing their local area and therefore when nominations were sought for gardening projects across the city, the Beneavin Estate was submitted as a possible venue. Fortunately the area was chosen and work commenced in July with adults and children working with the gardeners to create colourful flowerbeds on the green space.

Family Fun Days

North West Area staff supported Family Fun Day events which were organised over the summer by Residents Associations in the following areas of Finglas:-

Activities on the night will include a ‘Halloween Village’ with stalls, novelty acts, a showcase of local talent and a performance by the Garda Band. A fireworks display is also planned.

The Festival Committee are seeking to involve as many local groups and organisations as possible.

This year, in addition to the above, a programme of activities is planned for the week leading up to Halloween as children are not in school during this time. As well as fun-filled activities for young and old, there will be a safety element incorporated into the programme in view of the fact that Halloween can be an unsafe time of year.
