Diego Maradona for Rovers

Diego Maradona has read with interest the Gerry Ryan coverage in the tabloids. He is tempted to come to Dublin to manage Rovers because he knows that Rovers is the Boca Juniors of Dublin. He might ring Eamonn Dunphy on the quality of snow powder in Dublin because he does not believe that all the snow in RTE is dandruff. The phone has been hopping to Nottingham to check out the availability of Peter Shilton who has experience of the hand of God. Denis O’Brien should be asked to fund this as Rovers is a more likely bet than Wanderers. Sorry Chaps – but the Hoops have it.

Personally I much prefer to see the Hoops stay within a solvent budget than win the league and go bankrupt.

PS. When it comes to Rovers, there is only one. Not Sligo, Not Raith, Not Doncaster, Not Blackburn no no no – Yes Boez, It is Shamrock. My lads are fourth generation League of Ireland fans. Bill Tormey, my grandfather was the secretary of Athlone Town when the club won the Free State Cup in 1924 at Dalymount. I was a director of Rovers when the League of Ireland was won in 1994 at the RDS. I always regretted Ollie Byrne tapping up Stephen Geoghegan and Alan Byrne for Shelbourne but Ollie used Tony Donnelly’s money to buy the league. The rest is history. Rovers was saved by the Wilson family and by the fans. Long may they last. I hope Boez follow suit.
