Smithfield Horse Fair – Close it

At tonight’s City Council Meeting and at the earlier Group Leaders meeting with senior management, it was agreed by all that the new government would be asked to legislate to ensure that Dublin City Council could just close the Smithfield Horse Fair without having to legally find an alternative venue. There is a Royal Charter involved which makes legislation necessary to achieve this objective. Racing horses along the Luas Line and having horses with no tags or passports are some of the problems. There is a danger of horse stampede and of personal injury. This weekend mayhem must not recur. Paschal Donohoe TD will bring in a Private Members Bill to achieve the necessary legal changes and the City Management will point us to what is required in an immediate report to councillors.
