Navan Hospital – Orthopaedic Service celebrates over 10,000 Elective procedures completed since 2006

The Elective Orthopaedic Service at Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan celebrates the completion of over 10,000 Orthopaedic Procedures since 2006, of which 2,500 were Total Hip/Total Knee replacements, Shoulder replacements and Spinal Surgery Procedures. A presentation to acknowledge the success of the Theatre Sterile Services Unit (TSSU) in Navan and to celebrate the significant work carried out to date took place in the Regional Orthopaedic Unit, Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan on Thursday, 14th April, 2011.

The Orthopaedic Service for the HSE Dublin North East is regionally based and provides both a Trauma and Elective service which is delivered by seven Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons, Consultant Anaestetists, Dedicated Nursing Teams, Allied Health Professionals and Support Services across five hospital sites in the Louth/Meath, Cavan/ Monaghan areas. There has been a significant demographic expansion in the HSE Dublin North East area and in counties bordering this region which access these services. The Regional Orthopaedic Unit provide a musculoskeletal service to a population that now exceeds 400,000.

The Orthopaedic Trauma Service is based at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda with 24 hour trauma theatre Monday to Sunday and seven dedicated fracture clinics per week.

Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan provides a dedicated elective service with dedicated Orthopaedic Theatres, Central Sterile Services, Orthopaedic Wards, Pre-assessment, and in-house Bone Bank facility. In addition, all the support services required to provide this service are in place. Out-patient Orthopaedic Clinics are held in Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan, Louth County Hospital, Dundalk, Cavan General Hospital and Monaghan Hospital.

The reduction in waiting time for surgery was partly facilitated by the redevelopment of the Theatre Sterile Services Unit in 2007.
