Councillor Michael Mac Doncha and Dublin City Finance SPC

Sinn Fein councillor Michael McDoncha was co-opted onto Dublin City Council in place of Killian Ford this week and immediately elected as Chairman of the Finance Strategic Policy Committee. In the context of budget formation, I will be very interested to see how he will steer the agreement of the details of a budget which councillors have a statutory obligation to pass and oppositionism from his own head office. Councillor Ford had difficulties in the past working hard with officials and other parties to frame a budget and make hard choices only to be instructed to vote nay when it came to the crunch.

Sinn Fein, Labour and Fianna Fail voted for this man whereas Fine Gael put forward the highly competent Ruairi McGinley. We take our duties very seriously.

I hope Councillor McDonncha follows logic and does the right thing constructively. I have the expectation that he will because of the undoubted success of Martin McGuinness in Stormont.
