RAPID Update

Finglas Traveller Forum
The Finglas Traveller Forum made a presentation to the North West Area Committee on the 17th July 2011.
Since that time, the Finglas Traveller Development Worker employed by Tolka Area Partnership has left her role. In a similar vain, the role of Visiting Teacher ceased from the end of June and the number of Public Health Nurses assigned to the Travelling Community has fallen from two down to one. The Barnardos run Traveller Education Support Options also continues to struggle to maintain its current level of service.

The HSE recently made funding available to the Tolka Area Partnership with regard to continuation of the Traveller Development Worker role, however as yet the Partnership has to confirm if and how this role will be filled. The Traveller Development Worker plays a key role in relation to the issues and concerns of the Travelling Community.

Finglas Youth Seminar
A Youth Seminar entitled Changing Opinion into Action was held on the 31st May 2011 in the Finglas Youth Resource Centre, Mellowes Road. The seminar looked at issues of concern for young people in the area and how concerns/issues could be turned into positive actions. The seminar was attended by around 50 young people aged 14 to 20.
Staff from Finglas Youth Resource Centre are currently compiling a document that reflects the views and opinions of the participants. The completed document will be presented to the North West Area Joint Policing Committee in October/November 2011.

Mental Health Seminar
A number of groups including the Finglas Suicide Network, HSE, Schools, Youth Services and Tolka Area Partnership have come together to examine holding a seminar on Mental Health and Young People. The purpose of the seminar is to raise awareness of the levels and types of services available in the Finglas area and to identify gaps in service provision.
The group are acutely aware of the sensitive nature of the issue and will consult with a number of organisations before deciding on the best format for the seminar. As yet no date has been set for the seminar.

Finglas West Safety Forum
The second meeting of this Finglas West Safety Forum took place on Thursday 16th June. The meeting was attended by around 40 people. The main issues of concern were raised by the residents of Kilshane Drive and Dunsoughly. The issues relate to motor bikes speeding through both estates, anti social behaviour and illegal parking.
Unfortunately the meeting was dominated by a small number of people who raised a number of minor issues which in reality had no place at the meeting.

Kilshane Drive
Following on from the Finglas West Community Safety meeting a number of residents from Kilshane Drive met the Finglas RAPID Coordinator.
The residents outlined their issues and concerns which focused on their road being used as a rat run from Kilshane Road through to Ratoath Drive/Cappagh Road and illegal parking at the entrance to the estate.

Finglas West Community Hub
The Finglas West Community Hub is complete except for a few snags. The Board of Management is in the process of fitting out the building which includes a kitchen, tables, chairs, office furniture and soft furnishings.
A timetable for the centre has been drawn up, this includes a Breakfast Club, Teaching Resource, After school Club, Barnardos/Springboard, Finglas Youth Resource Centre, Finglas Adventure Club, Mother & Toddler Group and a Youth Study Group.
It is anticipated that the centre will be fully operational for the start of the new school year in September.

Finglas 4 Diversity
Finglas for Diversity intend to hold the Failte Finglas Awards later this year. The group hope to build on last years awards and involve as many groups and organisations as possible. Some concern was expressed that due to cut backs the awards may not take place, however groups involved in the awards have committed additional hours/resources to ensure that the event will take place.

Tolka Area Partnership
The Tolka Area Partnership recently invited the Finglas RAPID Coordinator to represent the Finglas Area Implementation Team on the Partnership’s Community Development Committee.
