500 Part-time staff in Irish Betting shops urgently need your assistance.

Dear Councillor,

From the 1st of September each year until the end of March the following year, betting shops must close at 6.30pm (unless Irish race meeting runs after this time). As a direct result of this archaic legislation, betting shops must let over 500 staff go during this period. Internet, phone and mobile operators operate 24hours a day, 7 days a week. Archaic legislation forces Irish customers to bet with off shore companies most of whom provide no employment and pay no taxes in this country during these months.

A very simple change in legislation would allow betting shops stay open and provide a service throughout the winter to its customers. This would save over 500 part-time jobs and increase revenue for the exchequer immediately.

I have attached our budget submission which will tell you about our association and our plan to assist the Irish Economy at a time when Ireland needs all the help it can get.

If you could convey this message to both the Minister for Finance and
Justice, who have the power to correct the legislation, our members would be very grateful.

If you have any questions or would like any further information please do not hesitate in contacting me.
