MRI scanners in Cork

I have been informed reliably that there are four MRI scanners in the
private section in Cork and no MRI scanner in the public sector. I
have heard also that Cork University Hospital limits post operative
MRI scanning in a budgetary manner. In the 1980’s Arnold Relman, the
then editor of the New England Journal of Medicine wrote an editorial
on medicine in a business climate. That editorial is relevant to the
Cork situation where radiologists appear to have a fiduciary interest
in these sanners which raises ethical issues. Referring patients to
your own institution and your own services offers a financial reward
to ignore competition and may not be in the best interests of the
individual patient. This issue should be investigated by the
Competition Authority and by the HSE in the South of the country.
