National Breastfeeding Week 2012

‘Good Health Begins with Breastfeeding’ is the theme of National
Breastfeeding Week 2012 which takes place from 1st to 7th October,
2012. Events will take place around the country to promote the
importance of breastfeeding for the health of children. The week also
focuses on providing information to families on breastfeeding supports
in the community.

On Monday, 1st October, the Economic and Social Research Institute
(ESRI) in partnership with the HSE National Office for Health
Promotion will host a half-day conference entitled ‘Breastfeeding in
Ireland 2012: Consequences and Policy Responses’ open to policy makers
across all sectors. The conference will examine evidence for
breastfeeding in Ireland and explore the policy interventions that are
needed to promote and support breastfeeding in this country. The
conference will be opened by Minister for Children, Frances
Fitzgerald, T.D.

A number of events will take place in the Dublin North East Area to
promote National Breastfeeding Week including:-

▪ Cavan General Hospital Maternity Unit will have an information
awareness stand at the front door of the Hospital. The Unit is also
organising a quiz for the general public and inpatients of the
Maternity Unit and is holding a Coffee Morning;
▪ Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital are holding a number of event to mark
the week including talks from guest speakers, presentations, advice
and support groups;
▪ In North Dublin, local Breastfeeding Groups in the area are holding
a Coffee Morning and a Quiz.
