Audiology Services in the North East

Audiology Services in the North East have been reviewed and a strategy was devised taking into consideration recommendations from the national review of Audiology Services.

The review of Audiology Services for Dublin North East recommended that the Community based Audiology Service is centralised into two centres for Dublin North East, namely North Great Georges St in Dublin and Dundalk, with outreach services to Cootehill, Co. Cavan. There are many valid arguments in support of this recommendation including the clinical governance and supervision of what is a small number of highly trained staff who offer a very important service.

As and from 1st April 2013, services for Meath clients are now delivered from 44 North Great Georges Street, Dublin 1 i.e. Adults & Children.

Another relevant development is the recent roll out of the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme into the Maternity Units in both Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda and Cavan General Hospital. The introduction of this programme now allows for the diagnosis of hearing impairment to occur within two days of birth and treatment to commence at a much earlier stage than previously possible. This is an excellent advance in the treatment of hearing impairment.

There were 3 clinics held in Slane (one child and 2 adult clinics) each week with an attendance of 25 to 30 clients a week.
