Nigerian Islamists accused of cutting throats of 44 villagers

Official says attackers gouged out eyes of some survivors of raid on Dumba village

Islamist extremists have been accused of cutting the throats of 44 villagers in continuing attacks in an Islamic uprising in north-east Nigeria.

An official from the National Emergency Management Agency said on Saturday the attackers hit Dumba village in Borno state before dawn on Tuesday. He said the method of killing was to avoid gunfire which could attract security forces.

BRITISH foreign secretary William Hague says he is ‘gravely concerned’ about Robert Mugabe’s re-election in Zimbabwe.

That’s par for the course. Hardly a day goes by without Hague condemning or deploring some event somewhere in the world. Nobody except the BBC and a couple of English newspapers pays a blind bit of notice. There’s not a thing Hague can do about any of it. Britain’s broke. His attitude is a sad and revealing imperial leftover.

Dear President Jacob Zuma…

I’m writing this because I’ve never been more disappointed with the ANC you lead. I was once your fervent supporter, I attended some of those night vigils during your trials, and, like many, I believed you would be the force for change the youth and the poor desperately need in our country. Like many others, I donated to your cause when I was called on, and allowed my facilities to be used for ANC and Youth League meetings, sometimes for unusual meetings where your political comeback was planned.
