St Louis School Rathmines at Charleville Road
I am in favour of this site being zoned Z9 rather than Z15.
If the land is built on, and that is the intention of the school authorities, then one sports hall and a tennis court that would remain cannot adequately meet the sports and recreational needs of a school of this size. Such sporting and recreational facilities would then come no way close to meeting the external facilities recommended by the Department of Education and Science guidelines for schools of this size.

Fine Gael’s policies
THERE IS nothing wrong with being ambitious in politics, but making exaggerated claims can be fatal. Fianna Fáil lost the confidence of the electorate through its mishandling of the economy and repeated assurances that the worst was over. Fine Gael is now treading the same dangerous ground by publishing policy documents that are heavy on aspiration but light on timescales and implementation details. In present circumstances, the public deserves straight talking, rather than old-style political slogans.
Publication of a policy document entitled “Reinventing Government” at the weekend was designed to attract publicity and confirm Fine Gael’s position as a government-in-waiting. But party leader Enda Kenny found himself on the defensive when he was unable to explain satisfactorily what would happen to HSE administrative staff when Fine Gael dismantles that organisation. To suggest they would be re-employed by private sector insurance companies under a reformed, single-tier health system was hard to credit. In the same way, promising to protect the vulnerable in society while cutting expenditure and making State services “smaller, cheaper and better” failed to convince.
Axis Theatre and Arts Centre Ballymun
This centre under the direction of the Board and Ray Yates is an intergral component of the soul of the new Ballymun. Regeneration is not just about buildings and the physical environment, it is about self respect, community, self image, pride in place and people and the realisation that Ballymun is a special place because of the richness of variety of its people. The Axis Arts Centre is the ticking heart of the community. Let no public representative fail to understand its centrality. For me the Axis forms a calm oasis in the hurley burley of surrounding life in all its intertwining of tenderness and compassion of local communities intersperced with the crude brutality of violence and sociopathy of drug crazed nehilistic vandals. Truly “All human life is there” – which used to the advertising slogan of the News of the World. Isn’t is unbelieveable that a former Taoiseach is appearing from kitchen presses to advertise his opinions on English football matches?
Glass Bottle Deposit
Here is a lobby letter I received from a well respected Parks and Wildlife Professional at Dublin City Council. I will not name the person because the person is very green and not party political.
I am writing to you about a subject that does come up again and again in my career.
And could easily be resolved if the government would decide to reintroduce the deposit on glass bottles.
Finglas Village
On this site on the 10th September, I wrote a note on the contents of a meeting I had with Mick Bailey of Beauvale Developments.
“I asked Mick how he could help in the Finglas Village regeneration. He suggests that a CPO is used to assemble the whole site and develop a horseshoe shaped series of neighbourhoods with a Supervalue type supermarket in the centre, as a completely new concept.
As Marumba (the current developers) is defunct, this at least is a new idea which we should investigate.”
