Accident figures for 2003 to 2007 in Dublin City Core

My colleague, Councillor Naoise O’Muiri has pursued the details of accidents in the core city centre. Pedestrians were involved in about half of the incidents. Note the last year was 2007. The truck ban has been implemented since and the statistics likely changed. The other detail causes such as speeds involved or whether J-walking or alcohol or drugs were contributory. It is clear that the accident rate and incidence is falling and may fall further even without the intervention of the dead slow speed limit.

DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL

NORTH CENTRAL AREA COMMITTEE

15th February, 2010

3867  Motion in the name of Councillor Naoise O’Muirí

That the Manager provide me with the detailed traffic statistics relating to serious injury/deaths for the last 3 years SPECIFICALLY WITHIN the area bounded by the new 30kph speed limit in the City Centre; these statistics were presumably the key factor in the decision to implement.

Report:

The most recent accident statistics available are for 2007.

In the period 2003 to 2007 there were a total of 8 fatalities all pedestrians arising from road collisions within the city centre 30 kph zone .  This figure excludes fatalities in 2004 arising from bus accident on Wellington Quay. There were 3 fatalities in 2004 , two in 2003 and one each year in 2005 , 2006 and 2007. The following table gives a breakdown of accidents both serious and minor for the same period.
