Economic pain statistics

The numbers at work in the economy continued to fall in the first
quarter of 2012, according to figures released today by the Central
Statistics Office.

Employment fell by 1 per cent or 18,100 people in the year to the
first quarter of 2012, bringing the total number of people working in
the labour force to 1,786,100.

According to the Quarterly National Household Survey, some 309,000
people are now out of work.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, employment fell by 0.4 per cent or
7,300 people in the quarter.

The seasonally adjusted rate of joblessness is now 14.8 per cent of
the workforce.
