St Francis Hospice in Blanchardstown : Great facility – being preserved for future use – Maybe!!!!

St Francis Hospice, Raheny, has been providing specialist palliative care services to the people of North Dublin City and County for the past 22 years.

The new Palliative Care Unit at Blanchardstown consists of 24 in patient beds, all of which are single rooms with ensuite facilities.  The opening of the 24 beds in Blanchardstown would bring to 43 the total number of beds for specialist palliative care at the Raheny and Blanchardstown sites.  The recommended number per 100,000 population is 8 – 10, or in the range of 44 – 55 for the North Dublin City and County Area.

There is a community palliative care team based at the Unit in Blanchardstown and providing Hospice Day Care and Out Patient Services two days each week.  This was funded by the HSE in 2011.

The HSE have not provided funding for the capital building cost of the building.  To date funding of the Blanchardstown site have been funded through fundraising.

St Francis Hospice has made submissions to the HSE for equipping and revenue costs associated with the 24 bed In Patient Unit.  Funding for this was not possible through the 2013 Service Plan and budgeting process and will be submitted for consideration in the estimates for 2014.
